Progress Report — October 2024

6 October 2024 No Comments

I’m using this monthly progress report to dish a bit more about something I’ve planned for 2025 release — briefly mentioned in last month’s report.

In the summer, I decided that the redrafting of my third novel, You Can Hear Chopin from the Attic, was taking too long to make releasing it next year feasible. But let’s face it… it’s about time I changed the record about The Berylford Scandals, the second instalment of which I published five years ago next year! I still have no plans to return to that series (yet). However, there is something else that I’ve turned my attention to instead.

While Chopin is on the back burner, with work to resume next year, I’m now finishing the last couple of pieces for MY FIRST ANTHOLOGY.

A collection that, at present, I call SILHOUETTES.

Silhouettes will comprise most of the short stories and poems written over the past few years. I’ve released some of them over social media, either in part or in full. Others, however, are yet to see the light of day. They’ll include tales of a bad-tempered publishing agent, a petty criminal with a sweet tooth, an ambitious magpie, daylight snobbery, and several really wicked old people. Plus, fan favourites such as My To-Do List and Sunday on the Boulevard (with my Pet Lobster).

I’ll reveal more in the coming months!

The Dale Hurst Writing Show

You came for a progress report, after all. Alongside the work on Silhouettes, my writing podcast The Dale Hurst Writing Show continues. Over the last month, we released episodes about fresh spins on science fiction, featuring author D.C. Eastman, and how to independently publish poetry with Karishma Natu and Ben Whittall.

With Halloween on its way, I’ll put out my latest horror-themed episode, featuring a successful film director and screenwriter. And in another edition, I find out more about the decisions that go into mapping fantasy realms.

You can catch up with the entire series on Spotify.

Bournemouth Writing Festival — I’m Hosting an Event!

5 February 2023 No Comments

Find out more about the little role I’m playing in the first ever Bournemouth Writing Festival in a couple of months…

Last year, I went to a book launch that Bournemouth University hosted. It was for a series of anthologies made up of entries from the 2022 Bournemouth Writing Prize; two of them feature my quirky short story Sunday on the Boulevard with My Pet Lobster. Here, I became aware of an upcoming event, namely the Bournemouth Writing Festival.

At first, I was only planning to attend the event. But the more I thought about it, the more I began to convince myself to reach out to the organisers. Long story short and a series of emails later, I signed up to volunteer. For what, exactly? They allowed me to host what they’re calling a Genre Breakfast (or Genre Meet-Up).

In other words, networking events for other local authors who specialise in a genre. My event, taking place on Sunday 23rd April, is specifically for historical fiction writers.

So, for the benefit of any such writers (or any who aspire to write historical fiction), here’s some important info:

Historical Fiction Genre Breakfast

Date and time: Sunday 23rd April, 09.00

Location: South Coast Coffee, Richmond Hill, Bournemouth

My event is one of six going on as part of Bournemouth Writing Festival that morning. See below for all the breakfasts happening that morning:

I’d personally love to meet like-minded historical fiction writers based in the Bournemouth and Poole area. To hear about what drew you to historical writing and what period(s) fascinate you the most. If this sounds like you, please RSVP via the buttons below.

Bournemouth Writing Festival will run on 21st-23rd April 2023.
